Germany usurped Poland to go top of Group C of the UEFA Euro 2016 Championship on Sunday night as they defeated Ukraine 2-0 in Nice. Poland had earlier triumphed over Northern Ireland with a 1-0 win.
Germany scored in the 19th minute through Shkodran Mustafi who leapt high on the edge of the 6-yard box. to head home a freekick from Toni Kroos.
Evgen Khacheridi, Evgen Konoplyanka (Ukraine) and Sami Khedira (Germany) respectively had chances to score in the first half for their teams but their efforts were thwarted by either good goalkeeping or the posts.
Kroos’ powerful left-footed shot hit the post in the 52nd minute as Germany’s dominance on the night continued.
Bastian Schweinsteiger within minutes of his introduction then made it 2-0 for Germany in added time when teed up by Mesut Ozil inside the box, curling the ball into the top right corner and past Ukraine keeper Andrij Pyatov.
