A Denis Cheryshev own goal sandwiched in between a Luis Suarez and late Edison Cavani goals were all Uruguay needed to defeat hosts Russia 3-0 to top Group A of the 2018 World Cup in their last group match at the Samara Arena on Monday.
Russia have won six of their eight meetings against Uruguay. La Celeste last beat Russia at the 1970 World Cup.
Suarez scored from a fantastic freekick drilling the ball to the bottom right corner in the 10th minute while Diego Laxalt’s shot was deflected into the Russian net by Denis Cheryshev beating Igor Akinfeev in the 23rd minute for Uruguay’s second of the afternoon.
Igor Smolnikov was red carded on his World Cup debut for his second yellow nine minutes before the break.
Cavani made it 3-0 in the 90th minute pouncing on a rebound after Akinfeev initially saved Diego Godin’s header from a corner.
In the other Group A match which bore no importance, Egypt lost 2-1 to Saudi Arabia to finish bottom of the group.
Mohamed Salah scored in the 22nd minute chipping the ball above an onrushing Saudi Arabia keeper but two goals from Salman Alfaraj (45th minute penalty) and Salem Aldawsari (90+5 minute) ruined Egypt’s hopes of gaining a win st the tournament.
